Yesterday I photographed the Women’s March GOTV Rally in Sacramento. It was a peaceful event on the west steps of the Capitol full of women and men, young and old, who all felt the urgency to DO SOMETHING. Like those who have paved the way for my own rights, I felt compelled to continue to pave the way for my daughters’ rights and their future. It’s inconceivable they might have fewer rights than my mother or me. There were other protesters adjacent to the rally. Despite the sound of sirens on a recorded loop which were intended to disturb this event, we all stayed focused and connected to the task at hand and to the joy we felt communing as a collective voice.
I met up with a few friends at the event and met new ones too. I offer these images to spread the urgency of preserving Women’s Rights which are most certainly on the ballot this Tuesday. Vote Blue! We are not going back.
This event was beautifully organized by Sandra Hazel and Jackie Smith with a lot of volunteer help. DJ Debbie Atkins kept the tunes flowing and MC Alana Mathews kept our message alive and in the forefront. The great speakers were,
1) Honorable Eleni Kounalakis, CA Lt Governor
2) Lauren Babb Tomlinson, Planned Parenthood, Mar Monte
3) Honorable Fiona Ma, State Treasurer
4) Heidi Sanborn, SMUD Board Director
5) Mary Duplat, Moms Demand Action
6) Penelope Oliver, Youth Activist
7) Ebony Harper, TRANScend Founding Executive Director
8) Colonel Pat Thompson & Barbara Brass, Senior and Gay Rights Activists
9) Honorable Cecilia Aguiar Curry, Assembly Majority Leader
10) Maggy Krell, Harris Campaign Spokesperson
These images are in chronological order. I can’t believe we still have to protest this shit.
