Thailand Part 2 Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son

by Lisa Richmond

Very quickly after arriving in Thailand, Koh Phi Phi, my husband developed a nasty ear infection. Knowing that we were planning to travel by plane up to Chiang Mai, we left for the main land a day early so we could get him to the hospital. This first image is after my husband returned to our hotel, all fixed, after going to the Tourist hospital in Phuket. Literally, he left in a cab at 9:30 am and was back by 11:30am completely healed. In 2 hours time (the hospital was 30 minutes away), we was escorted, treated and then they hailed a cab for him back to our hotel. The cost? About 75 bucks. Serious. He was a happy camper which meant I was now too.

We then flew the next day to Chiang Mai to go on a tour, counter clockwise around the Mae Hong Son loop. Ben Chrisman, who is an amazing photographer said that Pai was one of his favorites places to visit…so off we went. We hired a driver which was super cheap to chaperone us. His name was Tree and despite his English being just a nudge better than our Thai, we came to really enjoy this part of our trip…even despite the massive smoke from all the agricultural burning. It was another great adventure albeit smokey.

My handsome husband is healed and happy. Still unaware of massive Sierra snow storm.

We found Guinness in the Phuket airport. Something other than a lager. I think they were $10 an English pint. We did not care.

Much of Thailand wiring looks like this.

This man was apparently a rockabilly dance champion and had even won a competition in Vegas. I’m not very good a being led—but was happy to try—look at that form! Love meeting people on the road.

Tree, our fearless driver.

After a storm hit upon arriving in Mae Hong Son, a tree came down across the road and tore electrical lines down up and down the highway. A bit scary watching the seemingly unsafe methods being used to  clear the highway–but alas—the job got done and off we went.LISA-RICHMOND-PHOTOGRAPHY_0341

A very beautiful accommodation, Fern Resort, just outside of Mae Hong Son.

This is before Jeff and I ate our hottest Thai food of the trip (Phet mak mak)—I guess we asked for it. All smiles here….
