Oh what beautiful light we had at Alder Creek Tract for Emily’s Senior session! With Emily’s beautiful hair blowing in the breeze, her rosy cheeks and warm smile, it made it almost impossible to take a bad photo this evening.
Emily’s parents, Barb and Steve, are both teachers in the Pollock Pine School district and I first met Barb when she was recruiting volunteers for the new school community garden at Pinewood. As soon as I met her, I know I would like her! So, when she called me to schedule a Senior session for her daughter, I was not only excited to photograph Emily but also to capture their whole family too. As you’ll see from previous Senior Sessions, although the focus always remains on the graduating student, I am happy to include a few of mom and dad whenever they’re willing and available. In this case, it had been quite some time that the family had been photographed together, so I was pleased to make it work for them.
As a mom of two young girls, I particularly enjoyed the time I spent with just Barb and Emily, watching mom watch her daughter pose for the camera, growing up before her very eyes. It usually takes several minutes for photographer and subject to warm up and get “in the flow” but there was a moment where Emily is wearing the green dress and standing in the tall grass where it all just clicked and I knew she was just finding her own in front of the camera. From there, it was free sailing, enjoying our time together, chasing light. I especially love the moment I captured of mother and daughter cracking up; this image is probably my favorite from the session because it’s natural, real, and connected. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation Emily and thank you to the Simpson family.
