Melanie and Wai are planning an elopement on a beach in Kauai this summer. Sounds miserable, doesn’t it? With four young children and a family already living as one for awhile now, their “get away” will be all about them. And it sounds absolutely perfect. On January 21 I participated in the #WomensMarch in #Sacramento. I volunteered my time to the Women’s March organizers to document this event after my good friend and colleague, Michelle McDaid offered up our services. There were no individual stars in this event like the many brides and grooms that I photograph every weekend capturing weddings. This event was about all of our collective voices joining together, and choosing together not to remain silent or compliant. Early one morning last week, my trusty assistant (and daughter) Jaz and I headed out to meet Ayumi and her mom, Akemi. A field of green, wet with the morning dew and the moisture of a rainy spring, greeted us as we captured Ayumi in the soft morning light(and a few bugs too). I have been photographing the Anderson family now for more than a decade. Like me, they have two tweenage/teen children that are busy with sports and social activities. And, like me, getting on their family schedule can sometimes be a military operation, especially as parents Jessica and Brett also coach soccer multiple times each week. That’s exactly how we found ourselves almost at Christmas before we scheduled this year’s session.
